Today is my second day at Engineering Inspection Services (EIS). I spent the whole day with a guy named Mr. Binh. Mr. Binh is the senior mechinal designer. He has been working here for 12 years as of next month. He is one of the few people in the office whose degree is not in engineering, it is in drafting. The object to the right of me in my picture above is called the “Faro Focus”. The Faro is a machine that can take a total 3D scan with lasers. Binh and others typically travel around once a month to a plant that they will soon be doing work for. The machine will takes thousands of pictures and then they take the pictures from the SIM card and put them on the computer. It is very similar to google earth, except not cheap, and can show you distances between to points in the plant. Each scan takes six minutes, and you can do up to 133 scans. In my picture, the monitor on the right shows pictures of the scan, and the monitor on the left is my drawing of a specific part of the plant that EIS is doing work on. My intern ship has been interesting so far, although I wish it were less computer based and more hands on. I look forward to continuing here for the rest of the week.
