Sophia Musso Post #2

On Wednesday, all the patients I saw were babies that were born prematurely. They had nurses from the NICU come to our clinic to help us out. Babies born prematurely are likely to have developmental problems, and learn to sit or walk later than most babies. They also might say their first words later, so they need to go to a neurologist about every 6 months for a check up until they catch up with other kids. In some cases, though, the impact of being born prematurely may set kids back for life, but of course this is not the outcome for everyone. If you saw most of these kids out, you would never know there was an issue. These kids were so happy and a few of them even gave me hugs :) On Thursday, we saw a few patients in the morning, got lunch, and then on every Thursday afternoon Dr. Wong does Botox injections. But this is not for wrinkles or cosmetic changes. The Botox is injected into kids with cerebral palsy. Kids with CP have very tight muscles and limited range of motion in their arms or legs, so Botox is injected into specific muscles to allow them to relax. It was hard to watch the kids cry from being stuck about 5 times but it was interesting to learn about. I still love this internship as much as I did on day 1 and I am so excited for next week.
