Madalyn Cranford #1

On Monday Night I interned a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse at Oshsner Baptist. Her name is Mrs. Amanda and she works 12 hour shifts. Her normal hours are from 6:45pm-7:15am on select nights. She only had one shift this week which was Monday night. Since the NICU only allows me to shadow a nurse for 24 hours, I choose what shifts I want to work and combine them to equal 24 hours. When I arrived on Monday night, Mrs. Amanda and I went to huddle. Huddle is where all the nurses that work at night get together and the in charge nurse goes over everything that happened during the day. This is so the night nurses know what to expect during the night and know all the changes that happened. The next thing we did was switch shifts with the lady who worked during the day and she updated Mrs. Amanda and I on our 2 patients that we took care of that night. Each nurse has a primary patient which means that every time a nurse has a shift they take care of the same baby. We gave each one a bath and made sure everything was fine with them. They were on feeding tubes so we just hooked the bottle to the tube and they ate. I really enjoy shadowing a NICU nurse, I have learned so much already.

  1. What a great experience. It will be hard to keep those hours! Looking forward to see what else you get to do, Madalyn.
