For the second week of my internship, Mr. David asked me to shadow and help out other members of The Quisby Team. First, I worked with Mr. Thomas who is the Head of Maintenance at the Quisby. He is a retired facilities manager from Folgers Coffee and he ran all the sites in Louisiana. We started our day by walking through the entire hostel checking for any damage to the hallways or walls. After the walkthrough, we went through and checked every room making sure all the lockers and lights worked properly, the bathroom was functional, and to change the air filters in the AC units. After our check on the rooms, Mr. Thomas and I set up a soundbar in the main lobby. I really enjoyed my time spent with Thomas because it showed me the details that hospitality workers have to be aware of. The next day, I was asked to do research on two hostel companies that Mr. David and I were having a meeting with later that day. Samesun and USA Hostels are two companies that have hostels across Canada and the United States. Mr. David and I familiarized ourselves with their companies then went to lunch with the representatives for the meeting. I learned a lot from the meeting. I was surprised by the amount of work and time that goes into just starting one. It took Mr. David four years to get everything set to open The Quisby.
