Gabby Killett Post #4

Today, at Offbeat, when I first came in the office, I spoke with a staff writer, Amanda, about the event preview I had written yesterday, and she informed me that after making minor changes, she was able to publish the summation of the event on Offbeat's website. The link to the event preview is
http://www.offbeat.com/news/abstractnola-audio-visual/. This led me, of course, to deciding on my favorite activity in the internship as having been able to write. This is because even though writing an event preview was a bit different from the analytical sort of writing we do in English class and even different from the AP style work I've done through news writing, it was exciting to be able to exercise my talent in a way that was unfamiliar to me but still ultimately attractive to the editor that decided on its online publication. In this post, I'd also like to address those things that I've seen that have surprised me and/or made me laugh. For example, one of my assignments for today was to walk across the street to Mona's Cafe and grab a "Gambit" and "Where Y'at" publication that are available for free on stands there. Both are media publications in direct competition with Offbeat. Therefore, I was at first surprised to be instructed to look through these publications, but when my sponsor informed me that I was to update the online database of client contact information with the restaurants and other sorts of businesses listed as advertising and/or in the publications' restaurant guides, I understood. It made perfect sense that Offbeat, as a media company, just wishes to expand its connections as equal, or beyond its competitors. Another thing that has surprised me and even made me laugh at this job is that the staff only consists of 5 core people, not including interns and freelance writers. It is so incredibly impressive that 5 people can put together a publication of Offbeat's grandeur and at its frequency. I'm honored to have worked with of a group of people so hardworking and determined and am excited for the few remaining days of my time here.
